With the achievement of landing humans on the moon, public interest in the US towards space travel rapidly fell and for various reasons, the International Space Station became the focus of manned space flight for the next generation. Personally, I dont see a return on the hundreds of billions (directly & indirectly) spent on it. I would much have rather put that money into robotic spacecraft which can take years to get to their target, and spend years there exploring without having to worry about keeping fragile humans alive. Next year on Bastille Day, the New Horizons spacecraft will arrive at Pluto and in the brief period it is there, will hopefully be able to give us a new supply of data on the little planetoid.
