With the amazing diversity of people who live here, our nation has the potential to be great. I say potential, because in a country (and hemisphere) built on genocide and slavery, I do not think we will achieve greatness until we actualize the ideals that our founding fathers claimed to espouse, and create a just and free society for ALL. On this MLK day, I am reflecting on and feeling thankful in particular for everyone who has built cultural bridges, for all the artists and dreamers in barns and back rooms and back alleys over the last two centuries, who have dared to dance with, to sing with, to be with, or to love someone that society said they should stay separate from. I am thankful for the cultural contributions of African Americans that have made some of the most powerful expressions of art the world has ever known. (Rock! Blues! Jazz! Tap! Gospel! R&B! Hip hop! And not to mention Salsa! Samba! etcetcetc!) I am thankful for the resilience of the human spirit, and for the beauty that can grow even from the most painful of circumstances. I cant make it to the MLK parade today, but I am going to celebrate his memory tonight by hoofin with my friends at Lexington Jazz and Tap studio, giving thanks for the artists who have been and still are an integral part of the civil rights movement, and envisioning a society based on true INTEGRATION and not assimilation. The events of this past year have made it clear that we need to work, really work hard, to bring to fruition the dreams of MLK and so many others who have fought for equality.
