Women’s College M.A Road students decry decision to hold mid-term exams Oct 22: Students of Government College for Women, M.A Road have expressed strong resentment against the decision of the authorities to conduct mid-term examinations on October 25. Students, who hail from the flood-affected areas, have demanded that the exams should be postponed. A group of students from the college said: “Forget our books, we lost our homes and we are still living in our relatives’ houses. How does it possibly look reasonable that a flood-hit student who has lost everything can prepare for exams within three days.” “Hundreds of students continue to remain displaced and without books. Many of us hail from worst hit colonies like Raj Bagh, Jawahar Nagar and Gogji Bagh. Some of the students have shifted to far off places and don’t even know condition of their houses,” they added. The students also referred to the government decision to conduct annual college examinations in March. “What is the fun of having March exam session which the government announced for the sake of flood hit students when on the other side they are conducting our midterms? What makes it logical that a student can appear for midterm and not for final exams?” they questioned. Pertinently, the college itself happens to be one of the worst flood-hit educational institutions in the city. The students said the college is unsafe and there is risk of contracting infection. They alleged that the decision of college authorities to hold exams also goes against the government decision to inspect college buildings to ensure safety of students. “The college building is not in a condition where we can sit and appear in exams,” the students added. According to the guidelines of University of Kashmir, the affiliated colleges are supposed to conduct mid terms in the month of July-August. Controller Examinations of Kashmir University, A S Bhat said the decision of conducting midterm exams is taken by college heads and not by the university. “We only provide guidelines to our affiliated colleges and they have to follow it. We have not scheduled their midterm exams, it is the college principal who has to take the decision,” Bhat said. He added KU has nothing to do with midterm exams and final exams will be conducted in March only.
