Woohoo! This year saw Google, Facebook, eBay, Yahoo, AOL, Occidental Petroleum and many others drop their ALEC memberships, Stand Up to ALEC reports. Thanks to those departures, ALEC ends the year with a $1.5 million deficit. Meanwhile, contributions to the organization have dropped by nearly 20 percent. On the legislative side, 234 ALEC members were either defeated, retired or left state houses for other reasons, and according to ALEC, only around 150 new members signed up this year. From an ALEC letter to Google defending its positions: “The ALEC legislators conclude their letter to Google by stating, ‘To ALEC, nothing is more anathema than the government picking winners and losers.’ Instead, ALEC believes that it should pick the winners and losers, which is exactly what their model policies do. In energy policy, the big winners are the kings of coal, including Peabody Energy and Koch Industries. The losers are you and I, who live with the ramifications of a coal-dominated energy industry that threatens our planet and our health.”
