Worship Notes: Forms of Communion When we receive communion at FPC we sometimes go forward to receive the communion elements at (or near) the Table. When we receive communion in this manner we are acting in a way consistent with the earliest Presbyterian practices. We know, for example, from descriptions made of the practice of Calvin that, “...the people came forward as they had always done...one by one, receiving the bread from one minister at one end of the Table and the wine from a minister at the other end.” Under John Knox, the parishioners also left the pews and went forward to tables where they received the communion hosts. Only as Reformed churches got to the mid-seventeenth century did they begin to allow communion to be received in the pew. Current liturgical theology suggests that coming forward is the “best practice” in most circumstances, but also acknowledges the appropriateness of receiving communion in the pews.
