Would not let me share so its a copy and paste job not my words It is with a mixture of amazement,RAGE & annoyance that Ive read the gist of comments on ALL anti water tax pages & sites over the past few weeks, especially those who are labouring under the illusion that we can ring-fence anything with a referendum.......heres the DEAL about Ireland and the EEC or EU as its called this week.The notion of the EEC when we joined was that all member states would form a United States of EuropeI where there would be freedom of movement and goods between member states, without having to pay Customs/Excise/Duty. Ireland immediately sought a derogation for cars, claiming that it would destroy the Irish car industry (ie Fords in Cork) and accordingly,the EU let Ireland continue to charge these duties..they kept renewing their exemption until,I think, 1992, when the Eu said NO. The Irish government response was to introduce Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) which DIRECTLY REPLACED the duty charge, and as such, was illegal under EU laws.......but the EU sat idly by as the paddys continued to fleece their own with this legalized theft, which is alive today and makes cars 40% dearer HERE than anywhere else in the EU.It is also THEE single biggest contributor to road deaths, as all people can afford here is the basic model of a car, all extras increase the cost dramatically. If the EEC, or EU as it today, have let Ireland do as it pleases, and by doing so it can be reasonably argued that Irish people have NEVER really been part of this Trading Block, what ON EARTH makes anyone out there think we are safe within the EU, who are supposed to act AGAINST our Government where they breach EU policy,or when that Government fails to follow EU directives? It has, apparently come as a MAJOR SURPRISE to the EU that Ireland has an exemption to a Water Tax because we pay for it already indirectly via 5% of Motor Tax, 2% of VAT, the household charge and the recently looted Pension funds, and THEY are insisting it be introduced....hence Dame Ednas panic to do so AT ANY COST.The EU has let us down with VRT, and now the same European body want a Water Tax introduced.
