Written by Issac Hayes and David Porter and performed here by Mable John, sister of r&b legend Little Willie John, our Memphis To Mobile Monday Southern soul classic this week is Your Good Thing (Is About To End). Ms. John was born in Louisiana but grew up in Arkansas and after graduating from high school took a job at an insurance agency. It was there that she met Berry Gordys (founder of Motown Records) mother who later told Mable that her son was looking for people to record his songs. In 1960 she became one of the first female singers to record on Gordys fledging Tamla label. However, none of her records sold very well and Ms. John was demoted to being a back up singer until Berry Gordy dissolved her contract in 1962. From 1962 to 1966 Mable was part of the Raelettes the group of female singers who backed up Ray Charles. In 1966 she signed with the Stax label out of Memphis. Her first single, Your Good Thing (Is About To End), a song in part about freeing oneself from a destructive relationship, reached #6 on the Billboard R&B charts becoming her biggest hit. https://youtube/watch?v=WzLexvpy_qA
