Written to and about each of you, my classmates of the last 1960s, East Side Junior High. Especially dedicated to Belva Hampstead Farmer, Danny Lynn Stevenson, Mary Addison, Margaret McGaughey, Margaret Poe Wallace, Larry Cagle, Steve Deutschendorf, Clistis Fields Tallent, Tally Robert Glover Jr., Joyce Knox Taylor, Pat Horton, Mark Mahathy, Debbie Willett Marsh, Cathy Blake Coffman, Debbie Carr McDurmin... Our Wonder Years We arrived at East Side And left to varying worlds Our time in between was Special, yes of splendor! Our lives were blameless. Love blossomed, brightly. Dreams were vividly real Nothing seemed impossible. The King came back Neil walked on the moon Yet what I remember, So many sweet smiles. While Eagles soared high Friendships flourished Our hearts were united In unbreakable chords. Giggles and grins, And even some tears Oh how we remember Our days in the sun. Mrs Elberfeld, Mr. Horton, Oh how we feared them. Ms Bowen, Mr. Shelley, Oh how we loved them! Walking to school No ipods in our ears; Our eyes filled with sparkles From wannabe lovers. I still see us walking Down those weary halls Talking, laughing, hurrying Not to be late to class. Algebra, Shakespeare, Dramatic arts, music, typing English, science projects Industrial arts and Civics. Our worlds would soon change Not yet touched by war, By flaming riots and RFK. We held on to innocence. While years pass us by The memory of those days Live on, firmly planted In each of our hearts. Nothing can now rob us. For our bond was knotted, Our friendships were united Forever in the Wonder Years. Mike Mahathy
