Mogadishu, July 7, 2013 1004453_597562326948984_1866293513_nThe National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns in the strongest terms possible the murder a Somali television journalist, reportedly killed by two unknown assailants in the northern Galkacyo –under the Puntland administration – on Sunday night, July 7, 2013, around 7:00pm. This murder brings the number of the Somali journalists killed in assassination to three and the overall killed journalists in Somalia to five. Two unknown gunmen shot to death a television journalist identified as Libaan Abdullahi Farah better known as Liban Qaran, at Garsoor neighborhood on his way home from work on Sunday night around 7:00pm local time. He was shot four to six times on the throat, chest, heart and legs. He was rushed to MSF Hospital in the Galkacyo south, where he was confirmed dead and later the body was taken to his home. Witnesses said that the journalist was arguing unknown caller over the phone, before the two masked gunmen shot him. Fellow journalists who visited the hospital where the journalist’ wound was taken, said that he died upon bringing the hospital. “He died once he was admitted to the hospital suffering bullets that hit his head, heart and stomach.” said Abdullahi, a fellow journalist who gave only one name for security reasons said, “When I heard the shooting of my colleague over the phone, I was about to faint for fear, but we ask Allah to save us.” The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the murder in the strongest terms possible and calls for the Puntland administration an urgent investigation into the murder and bring the killers to book. “This is yet another unfortunate murder against our colleague Liban and is a clear indication of the dangers facing the journalists in this region and call for prompt investigation in the murder.” Mr. Burhan Dahir, the supreme council president of the National Union of Somali Journalists said, “I send my sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleague of late Liban and ask Allah to reward him in heaven.” Late Liban Abdullahi Farah had worked for several media houses including Radio SBC, Radio Daljir, Codka Nabada (voice of peace) Radio, Royal Television from 2003 to 2013 and now he was currently the representative of the recently launched Kalsan TV, a privately owned Somali television based in the UK.
