YOU JUST CANT LUZ! One of the few sources for gem-quality Opal in the U.S. is found at Opal Butte, Oregon, where a really beautiful Opal variety known as Contra Luz (which translates to Against the Light) is mined. At first glance, Contra Luz Opal appears to be hazy and milky because it really doesnt have face-up Play-of-Color - yet it reveals multi-colored veils and internal shimmer when light travels through it. Contra Luz Opal occurs in Silicified Rhyolite geodes embedded in decomposed Perlite. Shown here is a lapidary polished sphere with areas of golden-orange, yellow-green and pale blue.
