YOUR EARLY RETIREMENT PLANNING RESPONSIBILITY Retirement planning should start before or as early as someone gets into paid employment. I am advocating that Governments and corporate organizations should make and implement a policy that ensures that as soon as someone starts work, he or she is put three a five day workshop on early retirement planning which would include savings, investments, health practices, additional education, professional certifications and skills that are requisite to the enjoyment of life during retirement. Some of us would live for another 20-40 years after retirement. There is no retirement programme organized by our employers that would make adequate provisions for what we need at retirement. There is need to organize our lives in such a way that we have income flowing throughout our retirement life without us really having to work full time. It is called setting up the process for “passive residual income” and “multiple sources of income”. All who are in paid employment should necessarily prepare themselves for life in retirement which must include becoming an entrepreneur. If you get your gratuity and pension or retirement benefits and invest such in a business you have not learned well before retirement, the whole money would turn to school fees and you can only get experience. If that is the only income you have, you are in trouble. Some people fall sick and die shortly if they are lucky. If they are not lucky, they stay sick with terminal diseases such as the effect of stroke and hypertension for a long time. My recommendation is that people should start the business they would do in retirement many years - even as much as ten or more years - before retirement. That way, you have an existing vehicle and terrain you are familiar with to invest your retirement benefits. If not, the money would be wasted.
