Ya know, all the politics I talk on here isnt just about debate and discussion or espousing a given viewpoint. Its about life. Food stamps, housing assistance, welfare checks, Social Security, SSI Disability, Medicaid, Medicare, public transit, public schools, publicly funded universities, unemployment insurance, clothing and school supply vouchers and other forms of taxpayer assistance are a matter of life and death for millions upon millions. For elderly, disabled, veterans, children, and working poor and people who are unemployed through no fault of their own. These programs lift people to the middle-class. They enable people to have some niceties in an economy that is 70% consumerism. They assure some kind of retirement. They give people food security, access to adequate healthcare, a roof over their heads, warm clothes in winter and cool in summer, and assist people in getting quality educations and training to give them a fighting chance in a dog eat dog world. For those of us who dont have money to budget or save, let alone invest, programs and institutions like these can keep our heads above water. What other point is there in being part of a civilized society if the well-being of our people cannot be assured BEFORE wars are fought and funded and INSTEAD of watching inequality skyrocket without asking the well off to give something more back?
