Years ago, when I was a young, thin, Air Force troop in Japan I often found that I needed to do something to pass the time. 8 -10 hours mostly alone, in the dark of the night standing sentry for a single aircraft cordoned off far from any other aircraft or people was tough and time would pass slowly. We werent allowed to read, or to sleep, and there were no cell phones. All we had was an M-16 with 220 rounds of .223 ammo, and a two way radio which was used every hour to communicate the immortal words. Post such and such, all safe and secure Every couple of hours a vehicle patrol would come by and keep you company for 10 minutes, to bring lunch, or just to bust your nuts. What did I do? I sang, loudly as if no one could hear me. The fact is, no one COULD hear me. Practicing the scale was a favorite, and I often began a little higher or lower in order to be able to train my voice.
