Yes. The Ferguson police are the ones who need to stay calm. The scriptures warn us of the powerful who would cry, Peace, peace! seeking to hide the travesties they have committed in the name of justice. They demand peace when justice has been thwarted. Over the past months, Ferguson police (though not all of them, I believe there are dissenters among them, too terrified to speak their truth for fear of the punishing retaliation) have wrought violence with more violence, and beget hate with their hate. Tonight, as Ferguson police wear their riot masks and wield their bullet proof shields, with guns near at hand, in anticipation of the darkness falling -- waiting for night fall before releasing the decision is always a brilliant if flawed police strategy for crowd control, waiting for darkness and chaos to hide the dastardly deeds that may follow under the guise permitted by a declared state of emergency -- I wonder how many among them are terrifyingly troubled and vexed by their part in a sickening drama that reflects nothing of their holiest professional hopes for serving and protecting? Because I know they are there, standing among their peers, terrified of saying anything, and terrified of what they are about to do. Sanctioned by the state or not, there is guilt and shame smeared as feces all over the Ferguson police force tonight. And the stench of the dead does not leave ones mind, ones soul, so easily. Waiting for the decision, there has not been justice, how can there be peace?
