Yesterday David took several summer squash into work to share with some of the people there. The Garden is exploding with produce, the freezer is already full and the family is sharpening their knives and looking at me in a significant manner every time I serve up yet another dish with Zucchini added [see two posts ago about cooking] He came home and told me that a secretary and one of the messengers for the firm sat right down, carved one up and ate it raw on the spot. They were very excited. Now I do like to see enthusiasm over the bounty from the garden, but I cannot help but wonder at the level of just poor quality produce our super markets are selling, that someone would get so excited about an organic squash. Of course, when I think about it, would I do the same to a squash from a supermarket? Probably not. They frequently have woody skins, pulpy, stringy insides; god only knows what was sprayed on them, or what they were grown in or where they came from. come to think of it, I would question it cooked, much less raw. This brings to mind a scene in the Movie Soylent green, where Edward G. Robinson, does a last bit of scene stealing [this was his last film appearance] where he breaks down and cry’s over a wilted lettuce leaf and a overripe piece of tomato., if you are not familiar with the movie rent it. It seems that we are starting to come to this, I am going to email a friend of David’s who is very involved with nonprofit community projects in the City of Elizabeth and inquire about how community garden projects are coming or if they even exist.
