Yesterday I announced legislation to ensure safe and walkable streets, and also requested an analysis of the size of our fire trucks and whether they should be somewhat smaller in order to navigate our citys many narrow roads. Im a big supporter of our fire department - which does heroic work every day - but we have an honest policy disagreement about how to make our streets safer and more walkable. We have an epidemic of pedestrians being hit and killed on our streets (2/3 of the accidents are not the fault of the pedestrians). We are working hard to have safer streets, which means shorter crossing distances and moving away from overly wide freeway-like streets. The fire department, however, has opposed these pedestrian improvements and is now insisting that new developments have very wide vehicle clearance - significantly more than the minimum required. I dont accept that and believe building overly wide streets moves us in exactly the wrong direction. If our fire trucks are having trouble navigating our streets, lets consider somewhat smaller trucks.
