Yesterday, I held a hearing to encourage the San Francisco Employee Retirement System to assess whether it can divest of Russian securities - in light of Russias criminalization of being LGBT - consistent with its fiduciary duty to current and future retirees. Russian securities constitute a mere .14% of holdings. Russia has a long history of violent repression of minorities, including Jews and others. The law criminalizing LGBT people passed the Russian Duma almost unanimously and has 90% public support. This is not a country with which San Francisco should be doing business.
