Yesterday I wrote about John Lockes view that there are three categories of law. The third being the Law of Opinion or Reputation. Locke also referred to it as the law of Fashion; fashion in those days being synonymous with what we today would call style or mannerism or how we conduct ourselves within the community. I pointed out that this third kind of law still operates today and is the most harmful and abusive of the three types of law. Turns out Locke agrees with me. Locke believed this third kind of law represented only personal interests, without regard for the good of the community. He also felt it lacked legitimacy because it was the result of passion, not reason. And lastly, that it is in truth prejudice, not knowledge. What Locke is speaking of is precisely what I discuss so often on my show. It is members of society, acting either individually or in concert, to extort others into conforming to how such people believe others should look and act. The extortion comes in various forms; threat of expulsion from the group, personal shunning, or deprivation of social and/or economic opportunities. Locke wrote about this obnoxious (and in my opinion, evil) control over others 350 years ago, yet TONS of people continue this disgusting behavior today; a behavior that is an affront to the liberty of every person on Earth.
