Yesterday and today, thanks to TCMs tribute to the late James - TopicsExpress

Yesterday and today, thanks to TCMs tribute to the late James Garner, I was finally able to see two more movies I had never seen. Yesterday I watched THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY (1964) with James Garner, Julie Andrews, James Coburn and Melvyn Douglas. Written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Arthur Hiller. A good anti-war love story with a different approach. But I found the grainy and scratched stock footage distracting, and the script a little too clever for its own good, leaving me a little weary by the end. James Coburn was well on is way to future stardom here. Today I watched THE CHILDRENS HOUR (1961) with Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and James Garner. Directed by William Wyler. If I could, Id kick myself in the butt for having waited so long to see this. Quite a wonderful revelation! I have never seen Hepburn and MacLaine do better as friends, running a girls school, accused of being a gay couple by an evil, vindictive little girl. This is not a horror movie, but this child, played by Karen Balkin, is quite a monster. This movie also has a great performance by then child actor, Veronica Cartwright. This is a strong and moving film and it still resonates today, even though it was made in a different time. Kudos to all involved here.
