Yesterday, one of the most famous photos in the world was on the front page of the Toronto Star; the picture of Mbuyisa Makhubu, an 18-year old man, carrying the dying Hector Pieterson, a 13 year old who had been shot by police during the 1976 uprising in Soweto, South Africa. This photo bears witness to the brutality of the Apartheid government and has been a symbol of resistance since then. As it turns out, Mbuyisa could have been languishing in an immigration detention centre in Ontario for the past 9 years. Shortly after that photo was taken, he went into hiding out of fear for his life, and no one heard from him again. It is strongly suspected that the man in detention in Ontario could be him. The aforementioned man has refused to share his identity with the authorities after his plea for help to the South African Embassy in Toronto was ignored years ago. He seems to suffer from severe paranoia and possibly PTSD. During his last detention hearing, he was blamed for his long detention. How easy it is to blame the victim.
