Yesterday, the Las Cruces City Council voted 4-3 to approve a measure seeking to raise the citys minimum wage gradually to $10.10/hour, but those who pushed for the increase are not happy. The same three members (along with the mayor, who also casts a vote) who originally opposed the measure and recently passed a much smaller increase in a tactical move designed to take the wind out of the $10.10 campaign, cast their votes to pass the initiative, while the three members who originally supported the measure voted no in hopes that it would instead go to a November citywide ballot. In other words, the opponents of the measure passed the measure. Why? The city attorney explained that the two minimum wage measures passed by the council would now have to be modified and reconciled, giving the council majority against the measure the ability to block the more substantial increase initiative-backers led by the organization CAFé had sought. The Sun-News and the Albuquerque Journal both wrote articles on the vote last night. It is interesting to compare coverage from the two publications: Journal: abqjournal/459124/news/new-las-cruces-minimum-pay-raises-confusion.html Sun-News: lcsun-news/News/ci_26493821/Council-OKs-1010-perhour-wage-hike;-issue-remains-unsettled
