Yesterday was definitely one of the most unusual Independence Days - TopicsExpress

Yesterday was definitely one of the most unusual Independence Days I’ve ever experienced. Started off by getting everybody up and dressed and walked downtown to get ready for the parade. It was a day that you could not tell tourist from local, that’s for sure. This parade consisted of Haida dancers/drummers, roller-derby girls, the local bagpipe group (which was me fave), hotrods from the car show, floats in the shape of ferries, Canadian Mounties representing our friendly relationship with Prince Rupert, and much more. After the parade we headed to the carnival at the Plaza, ate some chicken adobo (a Filipino dish), and took kids to the bouncy houses. The wildest part of the day was when the kids went into a bouncy house which was in the shape of a coiled up snake. In order to keep the thing inflated, the opening and exits were just slits that you had to find and open up to crawl thru. Stryker went in after Georgie and all was well, for a minute. There were little windows spaced sporadically on the snake that you could look thru and see the kids crawling by. My mistake was looking thru and getting Stryker’s attention as he went by. He was nearly to the end when he saw me and then, since he had long since been left behind by the bigger kids, couldn’t find the way out. Panic isn’t a strong enough word to describe the screams and crying that were soon heard thru the walls of the stupid snake. It’s amazing how fast a momma can move when she hears the distress call of “Mommy!” screamed bloody-murder by her 2 year-old! Luckily, a woman standing nearby was witnessing this and offered to hold by bowl of food I still had in my hand. I then found myself diving into what is probably the butt-end of the darn snake (LOL) and had to crawl thru at least ½ of it to find the freaked-out child. Later I thought to myself that the witnesses were probably watching this all unfold thru the little peek through windows. LOL! Oh well. Stryker gladly followed me out of the belly of the beast and looked a little shaken up but was otherwise fine and enjoyed retelling the story later about “the snake throwing him in jail”. Needless to say, he didn’t crawl into that thing again. Later we went to some friends house to hang out. The kids had fun playing with Dylan and Owen and I had a great time visiting with some folks from England who were here on vacation visiting friends. It was quite a diverse crowd. There were the 3 from England (Isle of Wight to be exact), 2 from Glencoe, Oklahoma, 1 from Montana, and who knows where else. That’s one of the things I love about this place, you never know who you’re going to run into or get a chance to visit with. The day finished with the firework show that is always set off from the water and right in front of our house. We sat on the dining room table and watched them again just like last year, except this time we were blessed enough to have James with us.
