Yesterdays shooting at Seattle Pacific University has sparked an interesting dialogue between Medford police and the community. READ the statement below and JOIN the conversation! From Medford Police: I would like to make a few comments about Active Shooters Police have greatly changed the way we respond to active shooter events, we not longer wait for the SWAT team, we get there, find the suspect and take him out. We know that these active shooters will continue shooting until they either (1) run out of victims or (2) are neutralized. Citizens should also think about how they respond to active shooters as well. We know that police are going to be a few minutes out at least and weve seen the damage that can be caused in that short amount of time. If you get caught in one of these situations, you need to decide how you will act. Think about it now, before it happens. We tell people to Run, Hide, Fight. In the past, we find people going straight to hide which as proven to be deadly, and allows these shooters to literally shoot people as they are huddled in a ball on the ground. While getting away from the situation is always best, think about putting up a fight. All it takes is two to three people to overcome an active shooter and put a stop to the carnage. These shooters are typically not expecting resistance so when it happens, it catches them off guard. Fight dirty, use whatever weapon you can acquire, anything, chair, broomstick, pencil. My hat is off to the heros in Washington and I hope others will consider taking similar action if caught in the same situation. Hopefully this never happens here, but it doesnt hurt to think about it now, how you would react, so if it ever does happen, you have a better chance of survival. Have a nice Friday!
