Yogi and Ms. Sylvia fired up her mustang and traveled west of Leesburg to discover Luray Caverns near Shenandoah National Park. “Mustang Girl” was driving so fast that Yogi closed his eyes, and held on for dear life. Fortunately, the police were chasing other law breakers. The strategy was to visit the caverns during the first week of school to avoid field trips filled with screaming kids. Our other fear was large buses filled with old people, which would unload and swarm the caverns. But we were lucky on both accounts. The parking lot was uncharacteristically empty. Ms. Sylvia then tricked Yogi into descending into the underground cavern system which is lined with “speleothems” (columns, mud flow, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and mirrored pools). The caverns are best known for the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithopone made from solenoid fired strikers that tap the stalactites of various sizes to produce music. We were impressed. Thankfully no kids or “other” old people. When you climb back to the surface from the cave, you find yourself in the “gift shot”. Clever!!
