You have probably heard the expression that some people think with their hands or feet or some other body part but others with their brains. Explained – it means that some people act before they think. Prudence as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary states this: “the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason”. I have discovered something about the Bible when it comes to reason – it is not an enemy of reason in spite of what the rationalists, humanists or whatever philosophy might abound, but strongly encourages the usage of reasoning ability. In theological school, we were not only instructed but drilled in the science of comparing Scripture with Scripture and not taking anything in isolation as this in turn renders one prone to heresy which is just another word for people’s opinions rather than careful research. We must approach our studies in the Bible with great systematic understanding and not loose interpretations which might appear to be clever but as the Apostle Paul states: “..the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine…but you, keep your head in all situations..” 2 Timothy 4:3,5. More about the govern and discipline part will be tomorrow.
