You know its interesting about this emergency/ pre-hospital medical business. Im sure most people that arent in this line of work think that our business is full of caring and compassionate people; for the most part you may be right but I often think of one of my favorite Mike Smith lectures. It was entitled People Care. When I heard him give that lecture in my Paramedic class in 2001 I knew that liked this man. His lecture echoed exacltly how I felt about caring for people in this business and the basic respect you should have for ALL people at All times. It is very easy to get jaded and cynical in this business and not one of us is perfect. I just was thinking about how this very basic lecture may have been the most important message that Mike delivered. In fact Im pretty sure I recall him saying that this was such a high priority for him that he would immediatly kick a lerson out of his training program if he heard them use derogatory terms eegarding patients or heard that the person had used these terms at any of our clinical or ride sites. I am so thankful that he took such a strong stand to break our Underground EMS culture of any sense that poor people care or talk about people would every be acceptable. This is one of my greatest memories of Mike. RIP. Much respect.
