You know what I hate about being an actor? The divorce. As I - TopicsExpress

You know what I hate about being an actor? The divorce. As I sit here with a stack of material to learn for an audition, I am immersing myself in the life of yet another character (actually three, but mostly one) who I will attempt to embody, learn to love and respect, and will dream of the ways we will have a sort of life together, albeit in the form of a job playing him. The audition comes, you do your best, and in 5-10 minutes its over. Youre divorced. And unlike any actual real relationship, most of the time, there really is no chance in hell of reconciliation, and it hurts. Thats what I hate about this business. (Yes, you could get a callback. Even get the job. More often than not, youre divorced. I am not being defeatist--its the reality of what we do.) But its also what I love about this business. Because as much as it sucks, there are so many people we meet who never existed until we get that audition. Yes, writers create characters we embody, but they cant come to life until we add something of ourselves to them. And we live them for a while, and if you are doing your job fully, they take over your life. At least thats how I do it. So I will continue to study this material, develop relationships with these dudes, knowing at some point in the future we will be divorced. But that is the price of doing what you love.
