You may already be tired of seeing the science news that blew up yesterday. Im an enthusiast of astrophysics and quantum mechanics and I have a hard time grasping the concepts. Nevertheless, Im going to offer you a different take on the matter that are easy to understand. Two important things are reaffirmed from this discovery. 1) The predictive power of science. The gravitational waves were predicted a 99 years ago by Einstein. We were able to consider all of the available evidence and use deductive reasoning to form a prediction of phenomenon. No matter how distant or seemingly absurd it is at the time. Keep in mind that before all of the elements were discovered, we were able to predict the characteristics of elements simply by arranging them into the periodic table and looking at the properties of the elements around the missing ones. This one still blows my mind. 2) This is a big hit to proponents of Intelligent Design, because, among other things, it reaffirms that JUST BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS NOW DOESNT MEAN WE WILL NEVER HAVE THE ANSWERS and that the system is somehow flawed. We didnt the evidence for gravitational waves that supported the Theory of Relativity 99 years ago, but that doesnt mean the T of R was 100% invalid until now. Science is a system of standards and checks & balances. Corrupt outliers aside, this is EXACTLY how science works and how it benefits us.
