You were making lunch with your boyfriend Cody when he turned to you, “My family is having a barbecue this weekend, can you come?” You smiled, “Of course Cody, I’d love to!” Cody grinned, “I was hoping you’d say that.” On Saturday Cody picked you up and you headed over to his house. There were about 30 people already there, that made you insanely nervous. Cody squeezed your hand, “It’ll be fun, I promise.” You bit your lip, “Okay.” Cody led to the kitchen where his family was, “Hey!!!” Alli squealed and ran over to hug you, “It’s good to see you again!” “Hey Alli!” you said. Cody leaned in, “I’ll be right back.” “Did you bring a swimsuit?” Alli asked. You nodded, “Yeah Cody told me I should.” Alli smiled, “Well then let’s swim!!!” You and Alli both changed and ran outside. Cody spun around and saw you were in your suit. He walked over and wrapped his arms around your waist, “Oh, you told me you didn’t want to swim.” He smirked. You laughed, “Maybe I changed my mind.” Cody ran his fingers through his hair for a second, “I guess I’ll go change too. Be right back darling.” Cody came out a few minutes later; you and Alli were already in the pool. Cody did a flip off the diving board and swam over to you. You guys decided to do a round of chicken so you climbed on Cody’s shoulders and somebody tossed you a pool noodle. Alli had tom climb up on her shoulders and Tom grabbed a noodle. It was you versus Tom and Tom was already swinging. You tried to hit tom but Alli jumped out of the way. Everyone was watching you guys, laughing, by now. You and Tom were totally invested in winning and when Tom finally fell off Alli’s shoulders, everyone cheered. You leaned back so you could flop into the water off of Cody’s back. You surface from underwater and wrapped your arms around Cody’s neck. “We win!!!” Tom pretend to pout, “But I was about to win.” You smiled, “Yeah, I just got lucky.” Tom grinned, “I knew it!” Cody laughed, “I thought I was pretty good too.” You giggled, “Yeah I guess.” Cody entwined his fingers with yours. “I love you.” He whispered. You rested your head on his shoulder, “Love you too.” You all swam for a while and Cody offered to grill the burgers. You got out of the pool along with Cody and wrapped up in a towel. Cody grabbed a spatula and started the grill. He turned to you, “Burger, Hotdog, anything, what do you want?” “Five course meal?” you joked. Cody laughed, “So like five burgers?” You giggled, “I’m good with just one.” Cody shrugged, still smiling, “Okay!” You sat by the grill and talked to Cody for a while. “It’s so hot!” you pointed out. “I know, you can get back in the pool you know, you don’t have to sit here by the grill and wait for me.” You smiled, “I know.” Cody flipped the burgers and put them on a platter. “Burgers!!!” Everyone ran over and grabbed a burger. You got one too and hid the ketchup from Cody. Cody looked around for a moment, set his plate down, and walked over to you. “Ahem.” He winked. You tried to hide your grin but Cody caught it, “Please?” You laughed and pulled the ketchup bottle out from behind you. “Awhhh, I only hid it from you for like a minute.” Cody poured some ketchup on his burger, “Not even a minute.” Tom came by you and Cody. “Do you want to sit with me?” Cody asked. Tom shook his head and sat by you. You stuck you tongue out at Cody and he laughed, “Alli likes me better.” You laughed. “Haha, okay!” You guys all told jokes for a while. Tom though this knock-knock joke was great; nobody else did. When the sun started to set Cody led you upstairs. He opened one of the windows and walked onto the roof. “Cody?” “Shhhh.” He winked. You followed him and sat on the roof with him. “Wow, that’s so pretty.” He nodded, “Isn’t it?” “How often do you come up here?” you asked. He smirked, “More than I should.” You learned over resting your head in the crook of Cody’s neck. He wrapped his arm around you, “I love you.” “I love you too.” You and Cody sat in silence for a bit just taking in the sunset. Once the sun had set Cody helped you up, “Let’s go inside; it’s getting kind of chilly and I don’t want you do get cold.” You tucked some hair behind you hair and climbed back inside. You both ran downstairs so nobody would notice your absence. Cody’s parents were just coming inside now, “Cody it’s getting late.” Cody nodded, “I know.” He grabbed his car keys, “I can drive you home darling.” You smiled, “I can walk. I only live a few blocks away.” “I know, but I wouldn’t be comfortable knowing you’re walking alone at night.” He protested. “Okay, you can drive me home.” You bit your lip, he was so protective. All the paparazzi had gone home and the streets were practically empty. He started the engine and turned the radio off. “Why no radio?” you asked. He started to blush a little bit, “I thought I could sing for you instead.” You could feel your heart melting, “Well you sure know how to charm a girl.” Cody’s lips turned up in a smile. He started to sing Neck Kisses. God he was literally the perfect boyfriend. When he finished you had tears in your eyes, “I love you Cody.” “I love you too.” That was the last thing either of you said, before the oncoming headlights crashed into you. Your eyes fluttered open and you immediately shut them. Why was it so bright? You opened your eyes, squinting, “What?” you muttered. A woman in scrubs ran to your side, “Slowly, if you’re going to sit up, do it slowly.” You ‘slowly’ sat up, “Where am I?” “You’re in recovery.” She cooed. “Why?” “You don’t remember? Honey you got into a really bad car crash last night.” Your eyes were wide open, you remembered it all. “Where is he?” “Who honey, where is who?” “Cody. My boyfriend, he was driving where is he? Is he in recovery too?” The nurse frowned, “No, I’m sorry. He in the Intensive Care Unit, he’s not doing too well. You got lucky my darling.” “Don’t call me darling.” You realized how rude that sounded, “Please. That’s what Cody calls me.” She sat down, “It’s okay. You’re going through a lot right now.” “Can I see him?” you asked. “I’ll check how he’s doing first. You truly are lucky, you barely got a scratch.” “What injuries do I have?” you wondered. “You got some of the glass from the windshield in your skin, but it’s been removed and you’re actually clear for release today.” You couldn’t believe it. You swung your legs off the hospital bed. The nurse jumped up to help you. You let her to make up for your comment earlier. “Take me to him, please?” your eyes were being filled with tears. She nodded and led you to the elevator; she pressed the ‘up’ button and stepped in. Since you hadn’t been released from the hospital yet she had to push you around and a wheelchair. You got up to the fifth floor and she let you know that you needed to stay quiet up here. She wheeled you over to Cody’s room. Angie, Brad, Alli, and Tom were all sitting outside the room with swollen, red, eyes. The tears were rolling down your face, “I’m so sorry.” You mouthed to Angie. She nodded and hid her face in her hands. The nurse checked with a lot of people to make sure you could go in Cody’s room, “I had to pull a few strings.” She said. “Thank you.” She let you into his room and you caught your breathe when you saw him. Your hand was covering your mouth and you were hyperventilating. You slowed down your breathing and approached Cody’s bed. He was hooked up to more hospital equipment than you’ve ever seen in your entire life. The room was silent other than the constant beeping of the heart monitor. His hand was limp, and you set your hand in his. You had never cried so much in your entire life. After a few minutes some doctors came in to take you out, “No, please!” you begged them. They started to wheel you out of the room and you just started sobbing. Your insides were shaking and you could barely breathe. They rolled you past Cody’s family and they all watched you, crying too. “Cody!” you shrieked. “Stop it!” you yelled. You tried to get out of your wheelchair but the doctors were holding you in. You were forced to sit in a waiting room. Your parents were calling and texting you. They were out of state and couldn’t get there for a few days. A nurse brought you some hot-coco and a blanket. You went to text your mom but accidentally tapped your ‘Twitter’ app. The news of Cody being in the ICU had broken and people were tweeting you saying it should be you instead. You started crying again; you were hysterical now. A nurse came to talk to you and you told her what was going on. “They want me to die.” You choked out. She frowned, “I’m so sorry honey, and you don’t deserve that.” You and the nurse talk and she actually held you as you cried. You heard screams from upstairs, “What is that?” The nurse shrugged, “I have no idea.” She stood up to go investigate. “I’ll be right back, stay here.” She ran to the elevator. You heard more screams and they almost sounded familiar. The nurse came running back minutes later with tears in her eyes, “I’m so sorry-“, she couldn’t finish her sentence. You jumped up screaming, “What?! What are you sorry about!?” She couldn’t even speak and you were getting more emotional, “Tell me!” “Okay, I need you to sit down.” “What?” you whispered. “He’s gone. They did everything they could, I’m sorry.” You collapsed on your knees, nurses came to help you off the floor but you raised them away. You sat there crying for three hours; you soon had no more tears to cry. The screams you had heard were Angie’s. Angie; her son, how was she taking this? You wanted to go see her but you couldn’t even stand up. You needed to go home and rest so you could somehow process this in the morning, and the hospital had a shuttle. They made sure a nurse went with you so you were safe. You sat down on the bus staring out the window. He was gone; his humor, his smile, his protectiveness, everything. You could never talk or laugh with him ever again. You could never kiss him, or hold his hand, watch sunsets with him. As the shuttle pulled away it started to sink in, he was there and he was gone. You went back on twitter. Screw 140 characters you only needed nine. “I’m sorry” you pressed the tweet button and shut your phone off. You slept all night and woke up covered in a sweat. Was it all real, or a dream? You went and turned the news on, your heart sank. “Australian Teenage Music Star Pronounced Dead.” You went on twitter to double check it, was it true? All you saw were nasty tweets like “It should’ve been you.” The worst was, “You could’ve walked home. You made him drive, you killed him.” Your parents would be home today and you didn’t want to face them, you didn’t want to face anyone. You wrote a long letter to Cody’s family and left it on the table, and then you went to your room. “Honey, were home! Where are you?” your mom yelled. They couldn’t find you and they ran up to your room assuming you were asleep. When they walked into your room they started crying; your lifeless body was hanging from the ceiling fan. The tweets were right, it should’ve been you. Cody had more to live for, more to die for. You couldn’t stand being away from him, so you made sure you could be with him forever. “I’ll show what the stars are like and if it all works out tonight, Imma give you neck kisses”
