Young Earth – Old Earth 2 There is the question often raised of why should those who claim the Name of Christ contend with one another over the subject of whether the earth is very young or very old. After all, did not our Lord pray that we may be one even as He and the Father are One? (John 17:22) Let us look at the Scripture which says, “And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are One:” It is the glory from Jesus, the Greek word “doxa” that is the basis of unity. The primary use of the word is opinion, one in opinion. So as the Lord Jesus is One with God the Father in opinion so also Christian unity is based on unity of opinion given by Messiah Jesus. Unity based on compromise with truth is not of God! Recently the world was astounded when scientists proclaimed they had determined from DNA that all the human race had sprung from one woman. People who believed their Bible were not surprised by that at all. We even knew her names given before and after The Fall. Once again the Word of God was proven correct. But immediately there was a separation between old earth and young earth creationists. The old earth group said this woman lived thirty-five to fifty thousand years ago and you can imagine what the young earth people said. More recently, because of mitochondrial research they have also figured out the one woman had a single man in her life. We believe they lived at the same time for the most part of their lives. But we disagree about when those lives were lived and that is very important. Just to start with, the old earth view has a significant problem. It has death occurring before The Fall of Man, and however they might try to white wash it that contradicts the Word of God. Other problems are more scientific, such as the decreasing gravitational pull of the earth. However long Man and Woman were in the Garden of Eden before The Fall it could not have been over ten thousand years because the earth’s gravitation would have been too strong had it existed that far back. And that is not even discussing such things as rotational speed of the earth or the lunar pull on the earth. I for one do not believe God made these things and had to wait for them to slow down, lighten up and move far enough away for them to be conducive to man’s survival. My God is not that limited in His creative ability, and this is evidenced by the fact when He made them He did not say “I will have to adjust this a bit and tweak that a little.” Those are things men say when they make things. No, He pronounced them “Very Good!”
