Your words matter. Ive spent a great deal of energy being angry this week about so many things and I truly could not spare the energy but I did. Im angry that people think its okay to apologize for rape. It is not okay. Im angry with people who think it is okay to out the abuse of others. Im angry that people are all Hands off Bill Cosby because he is Bill Cosby! Im angry that people are all like but the guy who made the racist joke at the National Book Awards gave some money to some things and so you should forgive him when its no longer even about him but about the people who feel like shit because of what he said. Im angry that young people and their families spend money to send them to expensive universities where their basic human rights are ignored. Im angry about people confusing censorship with a personal decision made by a group of people who wish to distance themselves and their business from someone with whom they do not agree. This I will expand upon, I have been thinking a lot about my experiences of working with independent publishers. Those I have worked with are born from the deep love and hard work of the individuals who have shepherded them into being. No one is making their millions at a small publisher. What they do, they do out of love. And when they accept you and your words, they invite you into their home and make you part of the family. They do so with the understanding that you are not and will not be an asshole (and if you are an asshole maybe they chose you because you are one thats okay too!). But as in most families, they will forgive you if you show remorse and seek forgiveness. If you are petulant and insistent on being YOU with no regard to them or others, then maybe you need to realize that you need to be brave and accept the consequences of your actions, your words. It is not okay that people are raped. Its not. Its not okay that people are scared and feel endangered. It just isnt. Whether you believe the victims or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is that you take a firm hold of the humanity that is around you and accept that people are hurting. All around you. Just please open your eyes.
