Yum, coconut oil. This photo of cooking coconut oil was taken at Nembrella cooperative food garden in Rote, Indonesia. Food security is an ongoing concern for communities on Rote Island. Each year, the island endures a musim lapar or “hungry season” when the high seas and gales isolate the island from regular sea and air contact and food supplies run short. indigo foundation funded the first co-operative garden on Rote Island, in the remote sub-village of M’bore. This garden is thriving - boosting food security for the local community and providing income generation opportunities for the (mostly) women who work in the gardens and have few other options of making money. This year the M’bore Farmers Group exported 30 tonnes of onions. The M’bore Farmers Group has mentored a new food garden co-operative and four more co-operative gardens have been established around the main village. But there is a waiting list for funding new gardens. In 2015, indigo foundation would like to fund start-up capital and technical assistance for five new community gardens, including a funding for water storage tanks, water pumps and hoses, seed and transport costs for transporting rock for walls around the garden.
