ZOFTT INVADE MILLBROOK EXCHANGE PARK Well, it was more like sticking a toe in the water to test the temperature than an invasion. Rodney Ogden and I decided to go to the big city and see what was shaking on the courts at Millbrook Exchange Park. The city is still the same as the last time I was there: traffic, traffic lights, and traffic jams. The only Traffic I’ve ever cared anything for had Steve Winwood on lead vocals, organ, and piano with Dave Mason on guitar. I hate traffic with a small t. It wasn’t too bad getting there, but trying to get home at six sucked. They have a court especially for doubles challenges there. Neat, huh. And did I mention there was a couple HUNDRED people milling about? Really. No kidding. And I have to make 20 calls just to find four guys for doubles. That sucks too. Anyway, Rodney and I challenged a guy named Bob and a guy named Lindsay to a set. These guys were pretty good. Bob was probably the better all-around player, but Lindsay knew how to play the net. He was quick as a cobra and twice as deadly. He poached and killed them dead. No return. Forget it. They beat us the first set 6-4 but it wasn’t like we couldn’t have won. We had our chances. They took off on us in the second set, jumping out to a 3-1 rather quickly. And just as quickly, they were up 4-1 and Rodney and I were behind the eight ball. I guess that was our hint to pick up the pace a little bit and we did. We reeled off five straight convincing wins in a row to take the set 6-4. We stared another set against two new guys who challenged, Chris and a guy with no hair, let’s call him Slick. We were up 3-2 and leading 30-love on my serve when Rodney got sick and we had to bow out gracefully. Rodney is fine now and we had a great time. We may have to do some more travelling to find some tennis players if the guys around Zebulon don’t start showing up to play. I hate driving to, from, and in Raleigh, but I hate not playing tennis worse.
