Zara Levina, 1906 - 1976, Russian pianist and composer of 2 piano - TopicsExpress

Zara Levina, 1906 - 1976, Russian pianist and composer of 2 piano concertos, many solo piano pieces and vocal works, the latter mostly about or for children, or treatments of poems. Like many other Soviet era composers she suffered repression, particularly though not exclusively under Stalin. In her own words: When I look back on the way I traveled as a musician, I find it very sad that I have done less and worked worse than I could have. Only now (late in life) do I begin to understand how much I have not done, how much I still lack knowledge, professionalism, and the ability to deal with the material. Almost not a single work seems to me brought to an end. Impositions of life fell in our century that interrupted the development of new art, and left much broken, uneven, and marked by failure. That was our time: young, impetuous, tumultuous, burglarized, teething. . . As a pianist, I have not completely played, nor as a composer completely written. One idea after another flowed into me and the swirl of thoughts overwhelmed me. I find echoes of my own artistic development in those words. youtube/watch?v=CPiLC9BgbRs
