ZΛҠΛŦĪĿ FĪŦŔĪ Zakat ul-fitr is a type of sadaqah which must be paid by every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave, at the end of the month of fasting (Ramadan) before going for Eid, if you have the means. Can we pay in advance ? Answer: Most scholars believe that it is permissible to pay zakat ul-fitr a day or two before id. Ibn Umar reports that the Messenger, upon whom be peace, ordered them to pay zakat ul-fitr before the people went out to perform the id prayers. Nafi reports that Umar used to pay it a day or two before the end of Ramadan. How can we give out this zakatil fitri, the measurement ? Answer: One Sa = 3 Kilograms approx Or One Saa’ = Three Litres, One Mudd = .75L If you are the head of the family you are expected to pay for the people under you. Narrated by Ibn Umar Allahs Apostle enjoined the payment of one Sa of dates or one Sa of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the Id prayer. (One Sa = 3 Kilograms approx.) Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 579 Is it compulsory ? Answer: Yes is compulsory if you have the means. Narrated by Ibn Umar Allahs Apostle has made Sadaqatul-Fitr obligatory, (and it was), either one Sa of barley or one Sa of dates (and its payment was obligatory) on young and old people, and on free men as well as on slaves. Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 588 : Narrated by Ibn Umar Allahs Apostle made it incumbent on all the slave or free Muslims, male or female, to pay one Sa of dates or barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 580 Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar The Prophet ordered (Muslims) to give one Sa of dates or one Sa of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. The people rewarded two Mudds of wheat as equal to that. ~Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 583 : Alright ! So what kind of food can we give out ? Answer: Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri We used to give one Sa of meal or one Sa of barley or one Sa of dates, or one Sa of cottage cheese or one Sa of Raisins (dried grapes) as Zakat-ul-Fitr. Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 582 Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri In the life-time of Allahs Apostle , we used to give one Sa of food (edible things) as Sadaqat-ul-Fit,r (to the poor). Our food used to be either of barley, raisins (dried grapes), cottage cheese or dates. Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 586 : Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said in ash-Sharh al-Mumti‘ (6/183): The correct view is that anything that may be a staple food, whether it is grains, fruit, meat and so on, is acceptable. End quote. Like here in west africa our common food is rice therefore we can give out rice. The food that the people in your locality commonly eat is What you are going to give out. Ok, people say wheat is just two mudds and not three or four to make up one saa unlike other food stuff, how true is that ? Answer; Yes ! Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri In the life-time of the Prophet we used to give one Sa of food or one Sa of dates or one Sa of barley or one Sa of Raisins (dried grapes) as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr. And when Muawiya became the Caliph and the wheat was (available in abundance) he said, I think (observe) that one Mudd (of wheat) equals two Mudds (of any of the above mentioned things). Sahih Bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 584 : Narrated by Nafi Ibn Umar said, The Prophet made incumbent on every male or female, free man or slave, the payment of one Sa of dates or barley as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (or said Sadaqa-Ramadan). The people then substituted half Sa of wheat for that. Ibn Umar used to give dates (as Sadaqat-ul Fitr). Once there was scarcity of dates in Medina and Ibn Umar gave barley. And Ibn Umar used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for every young and old person. He even used to give on behalf of my children. Ibn Umar used to give Sadaqatul-Fitr to those who had been officially appointed for its collection. People used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (even) a day or two before the Id. Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 587 : Ash-Shafi and Ishaq sustain this view but some other scholars gave one sa from every charitable item except wheat, of which only half a sa would be sufficient. This is the saying of Sufyan, Ibn al-Mubarak, and the scholars of Kufah. Why must we give zakatil fitri and what is the consequences of not giving it out on time ? Answer: Narrated by Ibn Umar The Prophet ordered the people to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr before going to the Id prayer. - Sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 585 : Zakaat al-fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer and it purifies the little sins who did while fasting in Ramadan and another reason is to feed those poor muslims who cant afford food on Eid, atleast they too will rejoice. because of the report narrated by Abu Dawood (1609) and Ibn Majaah (1827) from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle and obscene talk (while fasting the ramadan), and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the (Eid) prayer, it is accepted zakaah, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is (ordinary) charity. Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. Whoever pays it after the Eid prayer has sinned and it is no longer zakatil fitri but an ordinary charity. You can give out your whole family zakatil fitri to a single person is allowed and Allaah knows best. Who can I give my zakatil fitri to ? Answer: To the poor. My Almighty Allaah accept our fasting as an act of worship and reward us abundantly Amin
