an update from Ukraine: The subject of higher #education fades away against the background of the violence escalating in #Ukraine. Recently, the Parliament of Ukraine has passed a new law on higher education in the first reading. It has been elaborated for many years now. Students held mass protests against those versions of the education bill which they found unfavorable. As a result, some most regressionist points were crossed out of the bill. At the same time, it is still not perfect and remains liberal in its essence. We would like to remind you that on February 21 to 28 this year students occupied the Ministry of Education in #Kyiv (see thenation/article/178662/far-right-groups-infiltrate-kievs-institutions-student-movement-pushes-back). They pushed the resignation of the Minister of Education, Dmitry Tabachnik, and his odious deputy Sulima. They also prevented a member of #Svoboda party Iryna Farion from becoming a minister. The Ministry was forced to adopt the practice of publishing all its financial transactions online, and the #transparency system has been in operation since April 1, 2014 (see https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=721001844611091). We think that education has to be available for everyone and fulfill an emancipatory function by training the critical thinking capacity. People who are brought up in the spirit of solidarity, mutual respect and orientation to open discussion will not be so prone to state and nationalist propaganda. This could solve one of the most serious problems nowadays in Ukraine and worldwide. #1world1struggle
