…and here we go again… One more kitten decided she wanted to - TopicsExpress

…and here we go again… One more kitten decided she wanted to be rescued by us. Two days ago I was on my way to the ranch for a late afternoon ride in between translation assignments. There was a lot of traffic and all of a sudden I saw a tiny, tiny kitten running out on the highway, and I almost hit it. I could not believe what I had just seen, as this was in the middle of nowhere. I stopped, with two dogs eager to get to the ranch waiting in the car, while I started looking for the kitten among 6-feet high grass and tons of garbage (right where I parked the car is a popular place for truck drivers to take a break). I called Steffi (my partner in crime) and asked for backup, as I knew I would not be able to put a tiny kitten loose in a car with two curious big dogs. Once in a while I could hear meowing, but with all the traffic noise, I had a very hard time telling where it came from. But this little kitten really wanted to be found, so she kept meowing, louder and louder, until I finally found her and could get her to safety. While waiting for Steffi I kept looking for more kittens, but did not find any. When Steffi arrived we took the little thing to the vet, where she got a checkup. Neither of us had ever seen such a skinny kitten before! She was literally just skin and bones, and had probably only survived thanks to the rain the last days, which at least had provided her with water. She had an eye infection, due to her severe state of malnutrition, and hypothermia, caused by the cooler weather the last days, but was otherwise fine and just lacking food. Her body was so unused to eating that she immediately threw up her first mouthful of food. She is about two months old and weighs only 450 grams/1 pound! You can tell this little girl is used to people, as she is very cuddly, and was purring from the first moment I picked her up, so she was probably thrown out on the side of the highway by someone who wanted to get rid of her. She is temporarily staying with Steffi, together with the other kitten that was rescued a few weeks ago (and her other two cats and three dogs…) but we are urgently looking for a forever home (and a name) for this cutie. As for the other kitten (a boy), I will let Steffi give you an update about him (he still does not have a definite name), as he will also need a forever home soon. Please keep your good vibes and your name suggestions coming!
