#artical 5 Reasons Yoga is Utterly Fundamental for Weight Loss. March 10th, 2014 by pathtocontentment 5 Reasons that Yoga Is Fundamental For Weight Loss If you had asked me before I started practicing yoga about whether it was good for weight loss, I would have most likely replied, ” I doubt it. I mean you are just standing around stretching aren’t you? How on earth could that help you lose weight?” Fifteen years on I have come up with my top five reasons that yoga is not just fabulous, body changing, soul connecting and energising, but just so wonderful if you are undertaking a weight loss journey. 1. Yoga is a holistic practice it is like a conductor that works with the body, mind and our emotional state. All these things are fundamental if we want to lose weight and never, ever diet again. Let me say that one more time, losing weight is as much a spiritual and mental journey as it is a physical one. To keep weight off in the long term and reclaim your joy then yoga is perfect as it tickles, tames and seduces your body, mind and spirit. 2. The Asana or physical component of the practice will stretch and tone the body and get the heart rate up there. It will give you gazelle like legs and sculpted guns. Maybe a washboard tummy too if that’s what you want. But it goes deeper than that, we are not just talking about our muscles, but it will also help our immune system, our endocrine system, the nervous system both sympathetic and parasympathetic and it sends lovely fresh oxygenated blood to all our major organs when we do things like twists and bends. Bottom line, yes you get a great butt and a healthy one too. 3. Welcome back your body. Often, when we are overweight we blame our bodies for being fat. Because our bodies are fat then we assume that is why we haven’t got a red hot love in our life, or being overlooked for promotion or just a feeling of being invisible. Yoga, helps us to swipe away the blinkers and really connect again with our bodies. We step into our skin and begin to like, love and really claim ownership of our own health and wellbeing whatever size we are. 4. The meditative elements of yoga are just as beneficial for us as the bendy stretchy bits. Here’s why- meditation helps us relax by bringing us into the present moment. When we are de-stressed then we are less likely to react with a double chocolate chip cookie when something happens that usually upsets us. Secondly, the introspective elements of yoga means that we begin to become very aware of what we constantly say to ourselves over and over again- which usually has the word fat and cow in it somewhere. Once we are aware we can then of course make much more loving choices about how we treat and speak with ourselves. 5. Finally, there is no judgement in yoga. Teachers don’t care what size you are, whether you can do any poses. Other students don’t care if you can bring your nose to your knees. Everyone is on their own journey. It’s all irrelevant. Yoga classes are a supportive nurturing environment that allow you to go on a very personal journey at your own pace you can make that adventure as introspective or as community orientated as you want it to be. Oh, I left something off- After yoga you feel blissful, stretched, strong and earthed. It doesn’t get much better than that. What has been your experience of yoga so far? Let’s share our stories as that is what inspires everyone else.
