as/safc Already it seems, Joe Kinnear’s negative impact on Newcastle United is no longer theoretical – with the new Director Of Football supposedly behind the club’s decision to pull-out of a deal for FC Twente’s Douglas. The connection between the Tyneside club and the Brazilian defender has been around for almost a year now, and it would have been – either now, or last Summer – a very good decision to sign him. Newcastle desperately need strengthening in central-defence, and Douglas would have provided an immediate upgrade in that department and formed a very secure-looking partnership with Fabricio Coloccini. He’s free, he’s a cultured and accomplished defender…basically, this was a no-brainer. Supposedly though, according to Sky Sports, Kinnear has identified other defensive targets which the club will now be pursuing. Why does that not fill me with confidence? Despite what people think about how Newcastle are run, one of the successful aspects of Mike Ashley’s time at the club has been Graham Carr’s scouting record – and on the basis that he was responsible for identifying Douglas in the first place, Kinnear would probably do well to follow through with the interest. This is how it begins, and this is the first sign of how dysfunctional the three-way relationship between Kinnear, Carr, and Alan Pardew could become – Newcastle need cohesiveness now, not a power-struggle within the club. So, no Douglas unfortunately, but the fans can expect to see Kenny Cunningham, Peter Fear, and Chris Perry stumble through the door any day now. This is a nonsense – and nobody should be laughing at Newcastle fans, because supporters of any club don’t deserve to be treated like this.
