::clears throat, mounts soapbox:: The sermon at church - TopicsExpress

::clears throat, mounts soapbox:: The sermon at church yesterday was about false idolatry. You know, the second commandment. A brief overview of the interpretations of this included Christianity, which forbids graven images of God; Hasidic Judaism, which also forbids the uttering or writing of the Lords name; Islam, which also forbids any graven images of the prophet Mohammed. Reverend Meg then went on to say that a healthy reasoning behind this could be that we cannot know G/god, in any of H/his/H/her/I/its forms. More to her point, its just as short-sighted to claim we know anything about G/god, in any religion. Based on the images Ive SEEN from the Hubble Deep Field, Im certain of this: we are unimaginably tiny. And if there is a God, then we cant even begin to imagine to hope to guess that we might know anything about Gods intentions. We are just microbes thrashing around in the dark, using religion and/or science to guide us as best as they can. But we all need to be a little more humble. We know statistically 0% about the universe. Nothing. Reverend Meg said it best (paraphrasing): Your claims about God are invalid if your sentence doesnt start with I could be wrong, but... I cant believe Im saying this, but I understand the complaints about the Cosmos last night. I understand that it was all stated as a matter-of-fact, without any humility or sense that any of it might not be true. And thats upsetting to some folks. And maybe theyre onto something. But come on. Dont fight fire with fire. If religion and science are going to ever work together, this stupid bickering needs to stop. As a disclaimer, I know there are plenty of Christians out there who are NOT spoken for by the post below, especially those I know and love. You guys know who you are.
