Also, identify which discipline you intend to elect in your Development Studies Program of Study and why you are interested in pursuing this major. Knowing your intended major will help us better understand your academic and research goals. In addition, this information will be used to direct your application to faculty in specific departments who will be in the best position to locate funding for you. Your intended major will make no difference in whether you are accepted. It is permissible for your major to be the same as that of your masters degree, or if your choice of major for the Ph.D. program represents a major change of direction in your academic training. Applicants may elect sociology, economics, journalism/mass communication, education, geography, political science, or anthropology as their major discipline. Applicants must select their advisor from a department associated with the major discipline. Note that for some of the major disciplines---sociology, economics, journalism/mass communication, and education---the courses that may be chosen to meet the requirements of the major may come from several departments. Applicants may not be sure which discipline they would like to select as a major, and so should list two or more majors that are of greatest interest. Also, if admitted, students will be free to change your major. Electronically submit your Curriculum Vita. Two official copies of your transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work. Please do not send transcripts to the Graduate School. Your transcripts should clearly indicate the title of the degree that was completed and the date of completion. Three letters of recommendation. List your references in the online application. A recommendaton request will be sent by email to each of your references. Applicants will not be admitted unless a member of the Program Faculty agrees to serve as advisor. If the Admissions Committee judges your application favorably, you will receive a provisional admission requiring you to identify your advisor. Refer to the list of Faculty and feel free to contact faculty directly. Many students remain with the initial advisor; others find a more compatible match during the first semester. Electronically submit a research proposal for the proposed dissertation is required for admission. The proposal should address an important real world problem in a specific developing or emerging area. It should demonstrate the applicants ability to formulate and complete a research project, including: their research skills; their familiarity with relevant literature; relevant contacts, resources and or access to data in the region that will facilitate conducting their dissertation project; and their ability to write clearly. Proposals should be double-spaced and five to fifteen pages in length. The proposal should include a problem statement, identify the research question(s), identify relevant studies and literature, propose appropriate methods and data to address the research question, and identify expected outcomes. Inclusion of relevant contacts, resources, or data that will facilitate the completion of the dissertation is desirable.
