e-mail from a member ... When I was a boy my father worked for the Navy as a civil servant with a rather high security level. He helped design and build guidance systems for A.B.M.s (anti ballistic Missiles) a missile called Nike, that was supposed to take out I.C.B.Ms (inner continental ballistic missile) you know, the ones with multiple nuclear war heads that the Soviet would launch at the U.S. capable of taking out any number of cities per missile. These A.B.Ms were housed at dozens of bases hidden all around the San Francisco Bay Area. As a boy, My father took me to one of these bases and I got to see where the missiles were to be launched from. I saw most everything this Nike Base housed. I believe I was 5 or 6 at the time. So I was made aware of what was a real possibility back in the 60s because my father worked and lived it. I was scared shitless of the possibilities. My father made it clear to the family during the Bay of Pigs crisis that if a missile attack were launched by either the Soviet Union or the United States of America that we would not survive living in the Bay Area. He did not laugh when I told him about the Duck and Cover drills at school. He simply looked at me with a look on his face that said, oh please Rick. And so the Me Generation or Baby Boomers lived with this threat held over our heads for over 20 years. Guess what happened? Nothing! And those bastards of my fathers generation had us all scared shitless for 30 years. All for nothing. War? This country has not stopped fighting since WWII. We are at odds with someone at all times. Ive learned to live with this over the last 6 decades. So what else is new? Boom goes London! Boom Parie! More room for you and more room for me. (Randy Newman).
