ellen and billy crystal are easily the two best oscar hosts ever. and that led me to think of what a train wreck seth macfarlane was. and that led me to think about the decline of family guy humour. and that led me, last night at one a.m., to revisit the notes ive made on what makes stuff really funny. this is an actual excerpt from my 20-page notes, circa oct. 2012: a man getting hit in the crotch by a cabbage that was shot out of a cannon isnt really funny. its funny, but its not REALLY funny. thats family guy humour. really funny is establishing beforehand a scenario (or some alternate universe) in which getting shot in the johnson by a cannon-propelled cabbage is, as crazy as it sounds, totally inevitable. thats what makes classic seinfeld, honeymooners, friends, simpsons infinitely funnier than family guy.
