filmgood.sm/en/film4-idents/ Monday AdLab - Film 4 Idents Directed by Man vs Machine (London) Film4 is the major TV channel in the UK that broadcasts feature films. Part of the Channel 4 network, Film4 enjoys a broad demographic, from film buffs to occasional action movie fans. Branding & Motion Design agency Man vs Machine, working under the creative direction of Daniel Chase of 4Creative, Channel 4’s in-house agency, have produced sixteen idents, presenting the visual expression of Film4. The technique used is a celebration of film craft, a contemporary interpretation of the classic strip of celluloid film passing through the projector, providing a visual signature beyond the logo. The life of an ident is three to five years and it must stand up to repeated viewings. It works at its best when familiarity is joined by the pleasure of discovering something new each time. The sixteen idents are a sort of establishing shots which are mood-specific rather than genre-specific. Using cross pollination and working on different levels, each one begins ambiguously but then develops into innumerable subtle cinematic references. From the iconic to the obscure, some are obvious, others are evident only to serious film fanatics – in Ident 3, on the table of the motel (itself a reference to The Graduate, Mike Nichols, 1967), can be seen a pair of heart-shaped glasses, acknowledging Lolita (Stanley Kubrick, 1962). https://vimeo/105340351
