from the rewrite of my literature review chapter - Three - TopicsExpress

from the rewrite of my literature review chapter - Three categories of literature were necessary in order to conduct the research and analyze the results. The first category is made up of works from which I learned the fundamentals of Polynesian astronomy, including the multiplicity of names for each important celestial objects, the architecture of the Polynesian sky, cosmogonies, and the sacred and secret nature of sky/star knowledge. These works background the research, although they were not writings to which I referred often during the research or at all in writing the dissertation. The second category consists of works that place star knowledge in a Polynesian context. This was an important category to which I frequently turned throughout the research and the analysis and interpretation of the research results. It was important, I believe, to be aware of and form ideas consistent with Polynesian epistemology and heuristics, at least to the extent I am capable. The third category is comprised of those works to which I turned specifically for the purpose of gathering, understanding, analyzing, and interpreting the research data. The most important of these works, regardless of how many times they appear in citations in the dissertation, are those of Kekuewa Kikiloi, Kehaunani Abad, and Lilikala Kameeleihiwa.
