...heres some good news starring one our Teachers ... Influencers on display IS it serendipity that three of Newcastle’s most prominent art figures are exhibiting simultaneously? All have influenced, often profoundly, students from the area’s art schools. Matthew Tome is the architect of the remodelled TAFE art school program and it is perhaps an indication that the new regime is now established that he has found time and energy for a show of recent paintings at Art Systems Wickham until July 6. It seems a long time since he showed with John Miller, but he is still actively exploring the sensuous qualities of oil paint. Skeins and snarls of expressionist mark-making occupy areas of the gallery opposite a wall of melancholy paintings, in which layers of paint support or reveal teasing images from wide-ranging museums revisited from the gyprock cave of the artist’s studio.
