https://twitter/kallos We congratulate Ben Kallos our new City Council Member whos inauguration took place today at the 92nd Street Y. It was a major event on the UES, packed with well wishers, including many political figures who spoke or were in the audience. I attended and we will post high lights from the various speeches. In his acceptance speech Kallos pledged to continue the fight against the dump, to great applause in the audience. Among the other issues he will work on: minimum wage, affordable housing for middle class families (he mentioned in particular with real estate builders eager with the 2nd Avenue Subway to build in the area), zoning laws, schools. He made some interesting remarks about how he would be initiating First Fridays at his offices for area residents to come and speak about issues. The first one will be February 7th from 8-10 am. His offices: 244 East 93rd and his phone number he also announced: 212-860-1950. The programs Master of Ceremonies was Senator Liz Krueger. She talked about him as part of the New Roosevelt Institute. Some additional highlights: The 86th Street Mens Choir sang. The Yorkville Nutcracker Snow Pas de Deux was performed by the Dances Patrelle. The 92nd Street Y Gym Stars performed. The Asphalt Green Wave Gymnastic Team performed. Among the numerous political speakers: Eric Schneiderman, NYS Attorney General, Tom Di Napoli NYS Controller, Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYC Council Speaker, Congress Member Maloney (by recorded video and she mentioned the continued fight on the dump), Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President, Dan Garodnick, NYC Council Member, Mark Green, Former NYC Public Advocate, Jessica Lappin, Former NC Council Member, Jonathan Bing, Former NYS Assembly Member and Bill Samuels, Founder of New Roosevelt. Also honoring Ben Kallos today were other speakers including Senator Chuck Schumer, Letitia James, Public Advocate (formerly chair of the Sanitation Committee), Jonathan Bing, Scott Stringer, Stringer mentioning how Kallos had campaigned for him. The only ones who mentioned the fight against the dump were Bing, Garodnick, Maloney and Kallos, and all to great applause from the audience. Several did mention Ploughgate though not by the name given by the press, but that it had been unfair how the East Side was treated in the snow storm and there were serious questions to be answered, and this was mentioned by both East and West Side politicians for the new administration. City Council Member Kallos also told the audience they could reach him at: benkallos He talked about creating 100 potential solutions to city problems and he would like to hear from area residents that he represents. We congratulate Ben and look forward to working with him to make sure that this ill planned dump is NOT built. NYC can find new solutions with the new de Blasio administration for sustainability without dumping a 10 story garbage dump between a playground, playing field and across the street from public housing. Congratulations to Ben. The work begins once again!
