https://youtube/watch?v=cafQLGB2cnY Heres a video of my exhibition at The Little Chelsea Gallery. https://facebook/Simonmarksmith and simonmarksmith/ Gallery website: thelittlechelseagallery.co.uk Thank you to Tony van den Dyck for filming the bits of me talking to camera. Heres what was written at the exhibition Much of my work in this exhibition is around the value of art, both in terms of the medium its created in and its monetary value. The first section of work on the left was all created by painting on an iPad or computer. There wasnt any processing or special fx, just painting digitally straight on to the screen. The value of a piece of digital work in itself is almost nothing, it can be replicated perfectly so has no uniqueness as an object. So this first section is just prints, however just by printing the digital work, limiting the amount of prints and signing them they take on some value. To the right of the big QR code painting in the middle there are a few prints which I also painted on, and by doing so they become as unique as any painting. The introduction of paint makes them real. To the left of the chest of drawers there are 2 works about the money and investment aspects of art. What makes good art is often what those with money wish to support and promote. Much of what is considered successful over the last 40 years will not be of any consequence in the future. In other words good art is often just of the moment. The digital frame on the drawers showing images I traced of controversial art works aims to point out the paradox of value in art. If Tracey Emin does a doodle it will sell for £15,000, not because of the image, or struggle involved in making it, but because people see it as an investment or a symbol of their own success. I traced these images and they only exist in a digital format, so by definition they are worthless. The QR code above the chest of drawers links to a self portrait I did on an iPad, at the bottom of which is written Ceci nest pas une peinture, (This is not a painting), because technically it doesnt use paint. The QR code has little images and words in it that relate to me so in its own way it too is a self portrait. The Chest of drawers has a half painted frame on it, this is a half digital half real painting. There is also a frame called the Trouble with Digital, this is about the fact that you need electricity to view digital art, whereas painting can exist on its own for thousands of years. The clock on the unit is set to the time my mother had a heart attack and technically became brain dead from that point, I see that as the moment when she died, although her body went on for another 2 and a half weeks. The chest of drawers is from her house and has digital frames in each draw which you are welcome to view. The first draw shows the contents of other peoples drawers, the next draw shows images of my family, my mother and my self... As the drawers go down other themes come in to play. The green image with a figure sleeping is a print on which I have painted, by adding paint it becomes more valuable because it is unique. The painting of a man looking at a couple was completely painted on an iPad and has the illusion of having texture. The next generation of digital art will probably incorporate 3d printing to create the complete illusion of paint. The two green self-portraits are together to highlight the difference of value between original and printed versions of an art work. An original digital image has no worth in itself, obviously it can be used commercially, but until it is printed it has no reality. With painting it is the other way around, the original painting is worth more than the print. The Red Boat in a Landscape painting started off as a photo of a piece of wall from my mums bedroom after the wall paper had been stripped. I then drew over it on my computer, printed it on canvas and painted over it with real paint, not sure why but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
