https://youtube/watch?v=x1hZo4eipQE Michael, do me a favor. Write a piece. Write a piece, and call it Departures, for both of our departures-yours to school, and mine...from this world When Raymond Wojcik said these words to me as he was dying, neither of us wanted to depart. I wanted nothing more than to just sit down, share a bag of pistachios, and talk music like we always used to do - like everything was okay. But that wasnt going to happen. It was time for me to go, and sadly, it was his time as well. The nature of such a request would seem to evoke nothing but sadness, but what it needed was the opposite. In a single moment youre filled with so much fire, it becomes electric; almost manic with energy. The thrill of moving, the anxiety of flight, the shock when you dont have a choice. You go to it before it gets to you. Just let go and hold on tight, because its incredible how fast it moves. When its time to go, its time to go - thats what this is. Whether its too soon or too late: whether youve been ready, you arent ready, or never will be ready - accept it, because this is for you - leave, fly, run, see you soon, Ill never see you again. Whatever it is, catch it and make it yours to throw back. Like you said man - something rhythmic, fast-with a lot of percussion - but always be yourself I thought of nothing but our time together in the sanctuary of the symphony orchestra, analyzing your Jubilee, (which became the obsessive inspiration for Departures). I let loose and shouted; pounded with the largest percussion battery Ive ever written. Its me. I wish you were still here, theres so much I want to tell you. You would be so happy. Its just another piece, but it meant a lot to me. Whatever, I guess I just miss my friend. Thanks SFCM - you have a damn fine orchestra.
