ibn al-Qayyim (may the Mercy of Allaah shower upon him) said, "The hearts peacefulness in faith upon the path of journeying to Allah depends on it being focused on Allah and staying dedicated to Him. The hearts weaknesses cannot be cured except by being truly devoted to Allah - the excess of food and drink; socialising; speaking; and sleeping weaken it, confuse it and stop it from journeying to Allah. Fasting was commanded because of all this - and from the mercy of the All-Merciful to His servants, to help them reduce their intake of food and drink, and empty their hearts of those desires that impede their journey to Allah, Exalted is He." May Allah keep us on the straight path by continuing to devote ourselves to Allah. Allahumma Ameen.
